Chris van der Merwe is a leading South
Africa-based travel journalist who has worked on assignment in over 50
countries. His special interests are adventure and ecotourism and he was
the first journalist in South Africa to use the terms "eco-adventure"
and "urban ecotourism" in his work. In 1996, he organised the first
international media symposium on sustainable tourism in his own country,
with input from UNEP and IUCN. He covered the Earth Summit in Rio in
1992, and during 2001, he initiated a media capacitating programme in
South Africa, in collaboration with the Johannesburg World Summit
Company, in preparation for the 2002 World Summit on Sustainable
Development. Since 1999, when the first of South Africa's four World
Heritage sites was inscribed, he has published several articles on this
subject, with special reference to reconciling heritage conservation and
tourism. He is also an eco-adventure travel consultant and itinerary
designer.
