Profile
Fergus Maclaren is TIES’ Director for the International Year of
Ecotourism. Throughout IYE, Fergus coordinated six regional stakeholder
meetings around the world in Belize, India, Peru, Kenya, Thailand, and
the Arctic, where over 750 community members, tourism operators, NGOs,
academics and government officials took part. Fergus managed this
process in collaboration with the United Nations Environment Programme,
leading up to the World Ecotourism Summit.
Originally from Ottawa, Canada, Fergus holds a masters degree in
Environmental Design (Planning) from the University of Calgary. He is
experienced in all aspects of tourism resource management and
development including training, site evaluation, needs assessment,
strategic tourism marketing, program design and evaluation. He has
worked in China, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Pakistan, the Philippines,
Thailand and Vietnam.
